Taking Care of Your Child’s Smile
Having a healthy smile as an adult starts with creating good dental habits as a child. We’ve gathered some dental hygiene tips for kids so you can ensure your child builds a strong dental healthcare routine. At Las Cruces Dental Solutions, we’re dedicated to helping your child, and you, maintain great oral health and a beautiful smile for years to come!
Baby Teeth Are Important
Even though children eventually lose all of their baby teeth, they still play a huge role in their overall oral health. Your child’s baby teeth help them chew and talk, as well as determine the future spacing and alignment of their permanent teeth. Since baby teeth are more prone to getting cavities compared to adult teeth, it’s important to take your little one in for regular dental checkups so our friendly team can check for any signs of tooth decay.
Teaching Kids to Brush Their Teeth
Getting your child to willingly brush their teeth may sound too good to be true, but with the right approach, we believe your child can be a toothbrushing pro before you know it.
- 1. Brush with them — Children often follow their parents’ lead. If you brush your teeth with them, they may be more likely to follow suit.
- 2. Encourage them to brush for two minutes — Two minutes can seem like forever to a child. Put on a fun two minute song from the Brush DJ app and have a toothbrush dance party to keep them entertained.
- 3. Persistence is key — If your child puts up a fight, try motivating them with a sticker, extra playtime, or letting them pick a song to listen to while they brush.
- 4. Incorporate flossing — Once your kiddo gets used to brushing, start to add flossing into their daily routine. You can pretend the floss is a pirate looking for treasure or play a game to help them look forward to flossing.
Schedule Regular Dental Visits
According to the American Dental Association, your child should visit the dentist every six months starting at, or even before, their first birthday. The earlier you introduce your little one to the dentist, the sooner they become accustomed to their appointments and the dentist. It’s important to show your kid that visiting the dentist isn’t scary. At Las Cruces Dental Solutions, we work hard to ensure your child feels comfortable in our care and even has fun, too! Contact our office to schedule an appointment. We look forward to helping your family smile brighter.
