If you think you need urgent dental care, it’s important not to panic. The first thing you need to do is call your dentist so he or she can see you immediately.
While getting to the dentist as soon as possible is essential for maintaining your dental health, there are things you can do to prevent further damage. Here are a few scenarios with specific advice for what steps to take to safeguard the health of your teeth.
Knocked out Tooth
If you’ve had a tooth knocked out, you need to try to save the tooth. This is very important. You can rinse off the tooth in water or milk, but don’t try to dry it. Store the tooth in a cup of milk, or tuck it inside your cheek to keep it moist. Make sure to keep the root intact. See your dentist as soon as possible so he or she can assess the damage.
Cracked Tooth
If your tooth is cracked or fractured, call your dentist immediately. Take over-the-counter pain medication to minimize discomfort. Use ice packs liberally to reduce swelling in your face.
Temporary Crown
If you feel your temporary crown coming off, make sure to catch it before you swallow it. Put it back in place with Vaseline, and make sure not to bite down too hard. Schedule an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible.
Infected Tooth
If you think you have any type of oral infection, get to the emergency room immediately. Notify your dentist once you’re there. The emergency room doctor will tell you what steps to take, and how to help prevent further infection. Do not try to treat the infection yourself.
Remember, if your mouth is bleeding or swelling, or if you are in severe pain, you need to see your dentist right away.
